Wideblue Client Wins 2012 Converge Challenge

Congratulations to Wideblue client Dr. Ekaterina McKenna who recently won second prize in the 2012 Converge Challenge with her business plan for Dynamic Bioarray.

Dr. McKenna of University of Glasgow’s College of Medical, Veterinary, and Life Sciences plans to create a new bio-nanotechnology company based in Scotland that will provide products, IP, consultancy, and services for the world-wide micro- and nano-array technology market.

Working from a proof of concept prototype provided by Dr. McKenna, Wideblue engineered the BioarrayClip to accurately align and clamp the microfluidic layers in a compact package suited to mass manufacture, whilst ensuring that the device addresses user requirements for ease of use and ergonomics.

The product has been very well received and we wish Dr. McKenna the best of luck as she builds her business.

Wideblue client Waveblade Ltd wins funding from Kelvin Capital

Glasgow based business angel, Kelvin Capital has invested £550,000 in order to develop a product pipeline aimed at the commercial sector to build on the success Waveblade enjoyed within the amateur boating market.

The firm also has support from Scottish Enterprise’s High Growth Unit, and is exploring applications for the device in oil, gas and mining.

Waveblade was invented by Ayrshire-based boat enthusiast and entrepreneur Hugh Fisher. He said: “I’m delighted to have secured the funding to take Waveblade to the next level and create a truly global Scottish company.”

John Swinney visits Wideblue stand

Among the many visitors to the Wideblue stand at the Scottish Technology Showcase was John Swinney, the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth. Speaking at the event Mr Swinney said “Unlocking the innovation potential within our companies is one of the key components of our aim of securing strong and sustainable economic growth, and our investment in research and development activity is playing a significant part in ensuring that Scotland’s businesses are able to grow and compete in the global marketplace”.

Wideblue delivers seminar at Heriot Watt University

Wideblue design and development director, Grant King, will be at Heriot Watt University on 11th May to deliver a seminar ‘Developing Your Product’. He’ll outline important considerations when developing a product from scratch, and basic mistakes that can set your company back.

Contactspod Launched At Opti’12 In Munich

Jim Hall, Wideblue’s business development director, is in Munich for the trade launch of Contactspod at Opti’12, the premier international trade show for the optical market.

Contactspod is a very simple but ingenious way of storing lenses in a sealed, single-use case that comes pre-filled with a sterile, multipurpose solution suitable for all contact lens wearers. Wideblue designed the Contactspod for high volume automated manufacture have supported Viopti through their manufacturing start-up and medical device approval phases.
